Video of the First Strike on June 9

June 13, 2008

This was the 4th time of the day. We actually weren’t going to sing this time but we just had to. Listen to the people clap at the end. Lois, who stayed on the train to go to work, reported that after we left the girls were gushing…’if they’d have asked for money, i would have given it!’, ‘we were having the worst day and then this! it was so happy! i feel so great now!’ etc.

First Strike (plan B)

June 8, 2008

It looks like Monday afternoon is best for most people.

Here’s the details of the rehearsal
WHEN: Monday June 9, 1pm
WHERE: Belgo building 372 Ste-Catherine west
walk down the main corridor, turn right, take the elevator to the 5th floor
exit the elevator, turn left and go to the stair well. In other words we will rehearse in the western stairwell of the Belgo building on the 5th floor.
WHAT: “Love is all you need”
Bernard and I worked out a very simple arrangement of this tune, with some nice 3-part harmony, that I think will be easy to pick up.

IF, we feel really good about it, we will go to the Place des Arts metro and try it out on a few cars, if we don’t we’ll decide on another time when more people to join us.
LET ME KNOW IF YOU PLAN ON COMING, so I can know how many to expect. Remember you don’t have to be a great singer or to even commit long term to the project.

Scheming to inject a little love into random metro cars,
David

FIRST STRIKE

May 26, 2008

Salut Everybody.

Last week we had a high-level meeting to decide the FIRST STRIKE of the Guerrilla Choir.

Here’s what we decided:
WHAT: We are going to walk into a metro car and start singing Lennon’s “All You Need Is Love”. It’s not the most innovative ideas in the world but it will work as our first experiment, even with only a few people.

We’ll sing it through it once, get out at the next stop and wait for another train and do it a few more times, depending on how long it takes.

WHEN: We going to shoot for THURSDAY June 5th. at 12:30. I realize this may not jive with everyone’s schedule, but we had to pick a date.

HOW: We’ll rehearse somewhere in the metro first for about 30 minutes.

HOWEVER, we’ll have a rehearsal earlier on Monday June 2 @ 2pm at my house. I don’t expect everyone to make it here; but if we have a small core group who knows the arrangement well, it will help to pull it all together at the last minute.

So send me a message on facebook or an email to info @ guerrillachoir . com and let me know if you can make the rehearsal and STRIKE on June 5 and/or the REHEARSAL on June 2. Then I’ll let you know how to get to both places.

Let’s Do It!

May 8, 2008

Imagine a choir that mixes into a crowded metro corridor one morning and begins singing “Slow down, you’re moving too fast; you’ve got to make the morning last.”

Imagine a choir that shows up at an immigration office and sings “We are the World” while seated among the newly arriving immigrants.

Imagine a choir that sings “We live in a Beautiful World” while riding bikes along the Lachine canal.

Definition: Guerrilla warfare is the unconventional warfare and combat with which a small group of combatants use mobile tactics (ambushes, raids, etc.) to combat a larger and less mobile formal army.

Guerrilla Choir would be a strike force for good, for love, for inclusion, for healing, for the earth.

If you are interested in making this happen then join the group.

If your interested in playing a role in shaping what Guerrilla Choir looks like, send me an email and I’ll tell you about an upcoming brainstorming. info @ guerrillachoir . com

Besides guerrilla singers we will need-

  • Instrumentalists-guitarist, djembéist and percussionists, other melodic instrumentalists-violin, flute, recorder, etc
  • Creatives-who can dream up more great ideas on where, what and to whom we sing
  • Legal consultant-to keep us and to get us out of trouble.
  • French consultant-we want to be bilingual, we need help thinking of French songs as well as translating information
  • Documentary makers-why not make a documentary of this?
  • Party organizer-so we can have lots of fun

There is room for a lot of people in Guerrilla choir – since we will be singing in weird places at weird times, it is assumed that not everyone will sing at every performance.

We will sing songs…

  • That you probably already know or that we can quickly learn
  • That have been arranged with simple harmony
  • That are accompanied by guitar, percussion and another melodic instrument
  • That have a specific message for the location
